Dolls and Faeries June 27, 2008

I’m excited about the upcoming Blythe doll, Milky Way Sugar. Just look at those eye chips!

And, she resembles me a lot, clothing style and all.

Book One) The Hunter’s Moon by O.R. Melling

rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is the third book I’ve read this month where the guy gives up/loses his immortality to spend the remainder of his life as a normal, mortal human. With the love of his life, I might add.

Hunter’s Moon tried my patience and halfway through the book I hated it. Melling’s style of writing involves loads of Irish culture, language, mannerisms, etc. and many occurrences that don’t seem to have anything to do with each other (at first). The only thing that kept this book in my hands was the faeries. Because I’m a sucker for the faeries.

In the end, I liked it. It had death and rebirth hand in hand, and a new faerie king, whom I here appears in the next book. Another trilogy to get warpped into.

Is it possible to become addicted to writing reviews?

A Modern Faerie Tale Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale by Holly Black

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Holly Black introduced me to the intoxicating world of Faerie and it has since to leave my mind, as if I too had been there and been polluted by its ethereality. This was one of those books I picked up randomly at Borders when I began high school, and quickly became a favorite and a quick go-to in times of need for satifying fantasy.

Kaye is a typical girl, a teenager with her problems and with a single mom who rarely does her given task of parenting. Then she meets Roiben on a rainy night in the middle of the woods, saves his life by taking an arrow out from his chest and she can’t get him out of her head, still like a typical lovesick girl. Then her skin starts to fall off, revealing green skin beneath that. And her faerie buddies come back, only not so playful or nice as they once were. Halloween’s coming, and for the faeries it means a Tithe must be paid to hell.

A classic that all teens should read.

Okay, I joined Goodreads. Foreseeable. I’m a lit nerd.

I’m also a vampire novel nerd.

Valley of Silence (Circle trilogy #3) Valley of Silence by Nora Roberts

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Began reading this book not knowing there were two books before it and that it was part of a trilogy, but I read it anyway. I normally don’t like to sumbit to big name authors who come out with a book every week, but Nora Roberts has proven herself witty with a sense of originality that I haven’t found in a fantasy book in a while, especially in a vampire novel.

As mentioned, this is the third and final book of Roberts’ Circle trilogy. The Six are preparing for their final battle with the dastardly vampire queen Lilith. Cian and Moira begin a relationship, both knowing it will end up in loss and heartache whether they survive the war or not.

I loved the connection between Cian and Moira, and their lovin’, even though I can’t say I liked them individually. Truthfully, I don’t think I really cared much for the six “chosen ones” that much, but as a team they seemed so fitting, like a family that was meant to be.

There were parts I had my complaints about, such as lack of description and not enough deaths, but the ending was so satisfying. I don’t want to give too much away, but indeed it’s happy and I didn’t see it coming.

The Tween in Me Speaks May 10, 2008

Which is ironic, because this month I’m turning the age that most Americans consider “adult.”

First, my birthday gifts to myself:

Fly On the Wall by E. Lockhart
Psyche in a Dress and Ecstasia by Francesca Lia Block
Second, I feel sorry for Stephenie Meyer. From what I’ve seen of the new Twilight movie trailer, it’s going to suck. Edward looks too weird to be hot, and I’m usually one that thinks those two characteristics go hand in hand.
